I think I most like the flexibility of my schedule and that I can research the questions that interest me most.

The flexibility is fantastic, you get a great work life balance. But also the sense of accomplishment. A PhD is very self-directed so you could be working on a problem for months. When you finally solve it, theres no better feeling!

There are a lot of outreach and community engagement opportunities. I love that there is a platform where we can share what we research with all ages, and we, as scientists, also learn what our community needs.

Discovering new part of a mystery, it’s so thrilling ! You did it all by yourself, with the collaboration of other scientists but you were leading the project.

Sometimes working on a difficult problem can be very hard and even frustrating, but this leads to even greater satisfaction from solving it. Also, I am always surrounded by young researchers and I love it!

Working with my hands. I’m not so good with sitting down and doing admin work so I love when I have either an experiment to plan and I get to use the whiteboard or when I actually carry out the experiment and pray that it works.

I like that my schedule can be flexible so I can decide what I’m going to test today and when. I also like that I get to work with other scientists who are interested in microbiology.
